The Meating House sits along Wellington Road in Mulgrave, offering a casual cafe experience with a solid focus on hearty, well-executed food packed with flavour. It’s not your typical coffee-and-cake spot — this place leans into generous, satisfying meals that make it a popular lunch destination for locals looking for something beyond the usual sandwiches.

The vibe here is comfortable and straightforward, with a clean, bright setup that fits well for a midweek catch-up or a relaxed weekend stop. You’ll find a mix of solo diners grabbing a quick bite and groups settling in to enjoy a leisurely lunch. The staff tend to stand out for their friendly, attentive approach, creating an easygoing environment where a brief chat feels natural rather than forced.

The menu features a range of dishes that work well as classic, filling cafe fare. The brisket roll, in particular, draws attention for its juicy, smoky flavours and satisfying portion size, while the pies and rolls serve as reliable go-tos for something quick but not skimpy. Sides like chips paired with gravy or well-balanced salads round out meals nicely. There’s also a decent selection of sauces on offer, allowing you to tailor your dish with small but thoughtful flavour boosts.

Visitors often mention the quality of the food staying fresh and flavoursome, and there’s a notable effort into ensuring gluten-free options and kid-friendly meals without feeling like an afterthought. This makes The Meating House not only a solid lunch spot for workers in the area but also a place where families can feel welcome.

The best time to visit seems to be around lunch hours when the place serves as a reliable stop for a substantial, satisfying meal — especially if you appreciate traditional cafe dishes served with a bit of local personality. Whether you’re craving something rich and meaty like the brisket sandwich or a lighter option like the spinach tomato avo bagel, the atmosphere here encourages lingering over good food without rushing.

A lovely clean and beautiful set up cafe. Food was wonderfully fresh and delicious. We had the arancini, the Cuban and salads. All amazing Rubi was a stand out waitress with exceptional attention to detail! Can't wait to return.

I can't believe I have walked past this place several times. Glad I found it. The menu has many favs of mine and is quite varied. I went for the Cuban sandwich and a side of chips. Cuban had the authentic taste and was a little tidier and lighter then ones you have down in Florida and of course Cuba and surrounds. But enjoyable. The chips despite not looking flash were quite nice and again enjoyable. The wait times was well within reason and the male server had great customer service skills. Despite this, I will plan in my work week to become a regular. Second visit, ordered the same. No change in review.

What an absolute treasure. The staff was very friendly and actually engaged in conversation, making the experience of dining in more personal. Don't get much of that these days, please don't lose the art of conversation with patrons. The food was delicious and such a great variety, I'll be back to try more. Would highly recommend this place even if you're not in the area. It's worth the trip.

I stopped in for lunch and had the famous southern BBQ brisket sandwich. Absolutely amazing. It was tasty, decent portion, the mean was juicy and well cooked and the flavours we on point. The staff were wonderfull and friendly and seemed to be genuinely proud of the food they were serving. Can’t recommend this place enough after my first visit. I’ll be a regular there from now on I think!

A relaxed, cozy cafe situated in the center of city. Ordered a chicken and bacon pie and a flat white, the pie is fulfilling enough for someone looking for a light snack and the coffee is just superb. Staff is friendly. A great cafe to visit
